Latinos & Violence in Philadelphia:

  • In 2003, the Philadelphia Police Department responded to 115,745 domestic-related calls citywide, of which 84,286 were founded. Nearly 20% of those calls (20,577) were to the Philadelphia Police Department’s East Division which encompasses Eastern North Philadelphia.
  • The incidence of Philadelphia Latino youth involved in the juvenile justice system has increased steadily from 1995 to 2000 ("Juvenile Justice Trends and Projections: Philadelphia 1994-2004", by Jonesa nd Harris, 2003).
  • In 2004, Latino youth were projected to comprise 14.6% of the caseload, with over 500 youth involved in the juvenile justice system ("Juvenile Justice Trends and Projections: Philadelphia 1994-2004", by Jonesa nd Harris, 2003).
  • In 2004, 21% of all juvenile arrests (ages 17 and under) for drug related offenses citywide were made in the Upper North area of Philadelphia.
  • The city’s estimated rate of 612 drug abuse episodes per 100,000 population in hospital Emergency Departments far exceeded the national estimate (261) in 2002 ("Drug Use in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Proceedings of the Community Epidemiology Work Group", by Cutler and Levine, 2004).
