Philadelphia, (November 2, 2016) – The American Cancer Society of Southeastern Pennsylvania has named Congreso de Latinos Unidos Inc. as a recipient of its 2016 Partners in Health Initiatives Award.
The Partners in Health Initiatives Award is presented annually to healthcare organizations that demonstrate a high level of commitment to the mission of the American Cancer Society, and enable the Society to expand its reach to new, larger audiences.
“The American Cancer Society is proud to present Congreso de Latinos Unidos Inc. with the 2016 Partners in Health Initiatives Award in recognition of its outstanding achievements,” says Jamie McCann, Senior Market Manager, Community Engagement, American Cancer Society. “Congreso’s work is contributing to the Society’s mission of saving lives and creating a world with less cancer.”
As a multi-year recipient of an American Cancer Society Community Empowerment & Equity Grant (CEE), made possible through Aramark’s philanthropic program Aramark Building Community (ABC), Congreso has been able to focus on breast and cervical cancer screening for the past several years and dedicate resources to increasing screening rates through the Por Nosotras (For Ourselves) program. Through the Por Nosotras program, Congreso was able to increase their breast and cervical cancer screening rates, increase community awareness via group and one-on-one educational efforts, and reduce social and logistical barriers by helping clients navigate through the healthcare system.
About the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of more than 2.5 million volunteers saving lives and fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society’s efforts have contributed to a 22 percent decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. during the past two decades, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Thanks in part to our progress nearly 14.5 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year. We’re determined to finish the fight against cancer. We’re finding cures as the nation’s largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, ensuring people facing cancer have the help they need and continuing the fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more.
