Next Step – Job Readiness & Training

The Next Step Program offers members of the community who are between the ages of 17 – 24 years old (with a high-school diploma or GED diploma) free certification training and employment. Next Step is an in-person and hybrid program.  

The Next Step Program’s primary certification training is healthcare. This program is an eight-week training course for students to become nationally certified in Phlebotomy and Medical Assistance. Classes are in-person at Congreso five days per week. Students engage in a mixture of lecture and lab work to learn clinical and administrative skills that prepare them for employment at hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, blood banks, health care clinics, Urgent Care sites and other healthcare centers.

Eligibility Requirements

  • To meet minimum eligibility, participants need to be between the ages of 17 and 24 with a high school diploma or GED diploma; residents of Philadelphia and eligible to work in the U.S.

Outcomes

The efficacy of the Next Step team’s training and supportive network is evident in the accomplishments of our students. Most recently, out of a class of 12, students in the Next Step Program Medical Assistance/Phlebotomy training showed a 92% pass rate on the Medical Assistant exam and an 83% pass rate on the Phlebotomy exam. In the following class group of seven, 100% of the students passed their Phlebotomy exam and 71% passed their Medical Assistance exam.
